The controls on iPhone-compatible headphones are always the same, regardless of manufacturer. There are three buttons: at the top, a volume up button; at the bottom, a volume down button; and in the middle, a multifunction button.

The volume controls work for music (iPod or any other music app) or phone calls. But the center button has a bunch of different features.

music tips iphone

For music:

– Pressing the center button pauses or restarts music.
– Pressing twice advances to the next track. Pressing three times (it takes some quickness) either backs up to the beginning of the track currently playing or — if you’re within the first few seconds of a song — to the previous track.
– If you press twice and hold, you will fast forward through the track. When you get to the point in the song you want, release the button. Pressing three times and holding (extra ninja points for you if you can pull this off) does the same with rewind.
– At any time, if you press and hold the center button, you will hear the two-tone chime that indicates Voice Command is active. Release the button and speak the voice command you want.

For the phone:

– Pressing the center button will answer an incoming call or end a call in progress. Pressing twice will send an incoming call to voicemail.
– If you get a new call while on the phone, pressing once will put the first call on hold and answer the other call. Pressing once after that lets you jump between the two calls.
– If you’re on two calls, pressing and holding the button will completely hang up on one party and return you to the other call.
